In the newspaper article "Turkish police use water cannons to clear gay pride rally," posted by Associated Press from the LA Times Newspaper, it states that on June 28, 2015 Turkish police used water cannons along with tear gas against gay pride marchers that were trying to rally in Istanbul's central square. This made demonstrators have to gather blocks away from where they wanted to rally. Hundreds of protesters were chased away by the Turkish police. The demonstrators were pushed into a small corner of the Square as Turkish police continuously fired jets of water to push them down the street and away from the central square. "Rubber pellets were also used," says The Dogan News Agency. Not long after this violent act occurred, the rally restarted a few blocks away from the central square and as the day continued several thousand people joined the rally. An Associated Press reporter who was located on the scene said that they "occasionally smelt tear gas, but there didn't appear to be any further attempt by police to interfere with the protest." Taksim square is one of the traditional focal points for protest so it is still unknown why police prevented the rally from gathering there.

The connection between this article and the theme of S.P.I.C.E would be that they both show social, politics, culture, and economics. For the social structure portion of this, it shows the position of the Turkish police(the attackers) and the position of the gay pride marchers(the ones who got attacked). For politics, or the governing structure, it shows a military example by showing how the Turkish police used fear and terror by attacking the protesters with rubber pellets and water cannons in order to scare them away. For the culture portion of this, or the religion and belief systems, it shows the difference in belief between the Turkish police and the protesters. It also shows the influence this may have had on people in Istanbul or people in general around the world. This could have shown people that using violence in order to get what you want is OK, which it clearly is not. I believe that things do not need to be solved in violence, there are other ways to handle situations like this without anger and violence. I selected this story because it shows perfect examples of the spice theme and shows how poorly people are sometimes treated simply for what they believe in. I don't think people should be hurt or bullied in any type of manner just because they have different beliefs than others. This situation should have definitely been handled more peacefully.
